Not content with just the EQS launch, Mercedes is taking it a step further. The iconic G-Klasse will soon welcome a fully electric variant: the Mercedes EQG. The EQG's unveiling is slated for sometime in 2023, with initial deliveries expected to commence in early 2024.
Two Versions: EQG 560 and EQG 580
The EQG is purportedly set to be offered in two variants: the EQG 560 and the EQG 580. Concrete details about these models remain largely unknown at this stage, although there are speculations regarding various power levels and potential battery sizes for these electric off-road vehicles.
Design and Technology Adjustments
The Mercedes EQG will build upon the sturdy foundations of the G-Klasse but with some adaptations. It is said to feature a revised front-end and a light strip between the rear light clusters, akin to design elements found in other EQ models such as the EQA and EQC.
Vision and Previous Registrations
The concept of an electric G-Klasse was documented as far back as 2017 when Mercedes registered various model series designations for an extensive EQ family, including the EQG. On April 1, 2021, the automaker filed the model names EQG 560 and EQG 580 with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), indicating tangible plans for these electric off-road vehicles.
Off-road Performance and Future Commitments
Despite the shift towards electrification, Mercedes pledges to preserve the off-road capabilities of the renowned G-Klasse. This commitment aligns with similar promises, such as the 100% electric Jeep Wrangler, ensuring off-road skills remain intact despite the switch to electric propulsion.
