Explosive growth of public charging stations in Flanders in 2024

12 February 2025

In 2024, electric mobility in Flanders has made a significant leap forward, with a remarkable increase in the number of public charging stations. The number of charging points surged by an impressive 81%, rising from 32,620 at the end of 2023 to 59,239 by the end of 2024. This growth highlights a strong commitment to the transition to electric vehicles in the region.

This increase comes at a time when the adoption of electric cars in Flanders is accelerating. It is a direct response to the expanding fleet of electric vehicles and the growing need for charging infrastructure. This includes both fully public and semi-public charging points, the latter being mainly located at business premises, shopping centers, and other locations that are not accessible 24/7 but remain open to the public for a significant part of the day.

Out of the 59,239 charging points, a substantial portion—41,587—is semi-public, while fully public charging points account for 17,652. This distribution emphasizes a strong focus on maximizing the availability of charging infrastructure by utilizing existing parking spaces at businesses and public facilities.

This development not only positively impacts electric vehicle drivers by offering them greater freedom and flexibility, but it also contributes to achieving Flanders' climate goals. With a well-developed network of charging stations, the barriers to switching to electric driving are further reduced, promoting a significant reduction in CO2 emissions.

The Flemish government has already surpassed its charging infrastructure targets, reaching the 2025 goals as early as the summer of 2024. This demonstrates a proactive approach that anticipates both current and future demand for charging solutions.

This growth is a testament to the collaboration between the government, businesses, and individuals in accelerating the transition to sustainable mobility. The future looks bright for electric vehicles in Flanders, with a charging infrastructure that keeps pace with the increasing demand.
