Mazda Unveils the Iconic SP: A Visionary Ode to Driving Pleasure

Embracing the Legacy of the RX-7 and Redefining Driving Excitement

Mazda’s showcase at the Japan Mobility Show turned heads with its overwhelming tribute to the MX-5. Yet, amidst the flurry of MX-5 enthusiasm, a striking new concept emerged, paying homage to the beloved RX-7. Enter the exquisite Mazda Iconic SP, a compact yet elegantly proportioned sportscar designed to encapsulate the sheer thrill of driving.

At the heart of this automotive masterpiece lies a profound dedication to celebrating the "joy of driving." Jo Stenuit, Mazda’s European design director, expressed his admiration, stating, "It's not the wildest vehicle on display, but it's unequivocally the most beautiful. It looks ahead to a future where driving is exhilarating.”

Stenuit further elaborated on the design philosophy, emphasizing the resemblance to the iconic RX-7, especially in the captivating color scheme. The silhouette of the Iconic SP exudes simplicity, from its modern interpretation of pop-up headlights to its sleek roofline and elegantly minimalistic rear treatment.

"In this creation, there are subtle elements that point to the future," Stenuit continued. "As designers, even in the era of electric vehicles, our focus remains on crafting a 'fun to drive' sports car, an area where Mazda has built a sterling reputation.”

Unveiling the technical details, the core components follow a clear trajectory. The Iconic SP features a rotary engine housing twin rotors, similar to the MX-30 R-EV, but here, its primary function lies in charging the battery, which in turn powers the electric motors. Although specifics about the number of motors remain undisclosed, the placement of the rotary engine in the car's center ensures a lowered hood and a resultant low center of gravity.

During the design phase, Mazda's team ardently pursued a shape that would optimize the driving experience, focusing on achieving a low center of gravity for unmatched driving pleasure. "Excellent driving performance was our guiding principle," the team explained.

With an impressive output of 365bhp, the Iconic SP boasts ample power, especially considering its relatively light 1,450kg weight. "It's wider, lower, and longer than an MX-5," noted Stenuit, emphasizing its distinct character. Maintaining a 50:50 weight distribution and offering flexibility in fuel usage, including options like hydrogen, further underscores Mazda's commitment to innovation.

Mazda’s CEO, Masahiro Moro, emphasized the brand's unwavering dedication to delivering vehicles that evoke pure joy and seamlessly integrate into people's lives. "As a company passionate about automobiles, committed to creating an inspiring mobility experience," Moro stated, "we are devoted to shaping a future alongside our partners and fans who share our love for cars.”
