There was a time when Porsche fans would tear their hair out at the mere thought of an SUV, let alone an electric one. And look at us now: the new Cayenne Electric isn’t just coming – it’s about to become the most powerful Porsche ever to leave the factory gates. Over 1,100 hp in the Turbo version, enough to embarrass your average supercar while you casually sip a flat white. And no, that’s not a typo.
Let’s start at the beginning. Porsche built the Cayenne Electric from a clean sheet on a stretched version of the PPE platform – the same bones as the Macan Electric, but given a proper grown-up wheelbase. It’s a touch longer than today’s Cayenne, which translates into rear legroom where you could comfortably cross your legs and read the financial pages. Boot space? 781 litres normally, 1,588 with the seats down, plus a 90-litre frunk for the cables you’ll barely ever plug in.
Because here’s the clever bit: charging. A 113 kWh battery with 800-volt architecture that can swallow up to 400 kW. Ten to eighty percent in under sixteen minutes if you find a decent charger. And for the truly lazy days there’s optional 11 kW wireless charging – just park over the pad and the car sorts itself out. No fumbling with plugs in the rain, no awkward dancing around a charging station. Park, walk away, come back to full.
Driving? The entry-level Cayenne Electric already has a healthy 408 hp – plenty to keep up with traffic – but the Turbo Electric is a different animal. 850 kW peak power, which is well over 1,150 hp with launch control, and 1,500 Nm of torque available the instant you think about it. Zero to 100 km/h in 2.5 seconds (2.4 if you ask the Americans). That’s quicker than the old Cayenne Turbo GT and its howling V8, yet delivered in near-silence that feels almost indecently luxurious. Regenerative braking can harvest up to 600 kW, so in town you barely touch the left pedal. And yes, it’ll still tow 3.5 tonnes – perfect if your horsebox or boat fancies going electric too.
Inside it’s pure Porsche, only better: a curved OLED Flow Display that blends into the dash, an optional 15-inch passenger screen, and an augmented-reality head-up display. Everything comes as standard with adaptive air suspension, rear-axle steering and active anti-roll that irons out bumps like they owe it money. Aerodynamics are class-leading with a Cd of 0.25, frameless doors and that trademark full-width light bar you’ll spot from space.
Best of all, it still looks, feels and drives like a proper Cayenne – only faster than most supercars and with the serenity of a luxury liner. Range? Up to 640 km WLTP, easily enough for the school run, the commute and a weekend away without a single pang of range anxiety.
In short, if you thought electric cars were boring, Porsche has just drawn a very thick line under that idea. This isn’t just another electric SUV. This is the future – and it accelerates harder than your bank manager would probably like.
