Belgium Leads the Way in Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure

Introduction:

Belgium deserves praise for its outstanding performance in electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure. According to data from the European Alternative Fuels Observatory, Belgium has even become an example for Europe. The growth in both regular and fast charging points is remarkable, with an impressive increase in the number of ultra-fast chargers.

Regular Charging Points (AC):

  • The number of regular charging points has significantly increased, from 22,614 to 41,903 units in just one year.
  • These charging points are mostly semi-public and are located in parking lots of various locations such as restaurants, shops, or businesses.
  • Although most charging points are semi-public and often accessible only during opening hours, the growth remains impressive.

Fast Charging Points (DC):

  • The number of fast charging points has also seen a spectacular increase, from 894 to 2,460 units, which corresponds to a 275% growth.
  • A striking trend is the dominance of ultra-fast chargers, with a power of over 150 kW.

Belgium in Numbers:

  • Number of regular charging points (AC): 41,903
  • Number of fast charging points (DC): 2,460
  • Of which >150 kW: 1,664
  • Total number of passenger cars in Belgium: 6.03 million
    • Number of electrically rechargeable vehicles: 364,394 (6.04% of total)
    • Of which fully electric: 138,749 (2.30%)
    • Of which plug-in hybrids: 225,645 (3.74%)
  • Number of electrically rechargeable vehicles per regular charging point: 8.7
  • Number of fully electric vehicles per fast charging point: 56.4

Conclusion:

Belgium has taken a leading role in the development of EV charging infrastructure, with a significant increase in both regular and fast charging points. This impressive progress reflects the country's commitment to sustainable mobility and contributes to the acceptance and adoption of electric vehicles across Europe.
