Revelation of Tesla Cybertruck Specifications: Weight, Payload, and Towing Capacity
After months of speculation and waiting, official details of the long-awaited Tesla Cybertruck have finally been unveiled on a display in a Tesla store in San Diego. The production of the Cybertruck has seen a series of events, akin to an exciting movie. Delays, vague price indications, a constant stream of spy photos, and images of pre-production vehicles, and more. However, amidst all of this, we now have crucial information to hold onto. The first Cybertruck delivery is scheduled for November 30th, and today we finally have some official specifications of the Cybertruck on a sign in a Tesla store.
Weight, Payload, and Towing Capacity
Previously, there was talk of a $40,000 single-motor, rear-wheel-drive Cybertruck at the 2019 announcement, but it seems that this is no longer planned. Instead, there are hints towards dual-motor or triple-motor configurations. According to an earlier estimation from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Cybertruck would have a GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) between 8,001 and 10,000 pounds, resulting in an estimated curb weight between 3,175 and 3,629 kilograms, depending on the configuration.
From the official display in the Tesla store, we now know that the Tesla Cybertruck has a maximum payload of 1,134 kilograms and a towing capacity of 4,989 kilograms. This represents a decrease from the previously claimed payload of 1,587 kilograms during the 2019 launch. It is expected that the payload of the tri-motor model will be lower than 1,134 kilograms, given the higher weight of that drivetrain configuration.
Innovative Features
The display also confirms that the Cybertruck is equipped with shatterproof glass. Although modern glass in the automotive industry is often referred to as "shatterproof," this point remains somewhat confusing, unless Tesla has applied unique coatings, layers, or treatments that have not yet been fully disclosed. Elon Musk apparently fired at a test vehicle with a machine gun to test the bodywork, seemingly resulting in satisfactory performance based on the bullet-riddled Cybertruck that was spotted.
Technological Features
The Cybertruck will feature adaptive air suspension with various modes for on-road and off-road use. Additionally, there's mention of an "ultra-hard stainless-steel" exoskeleton.
While the revelation of payload and towing capacity is great, there are still some facts and figures missing, such as the EPA estimated range on a full charge, charging rates and times, cargo and passenger volume, options packaging, 0 to 100 km/h time, and the official curb weight.
