Changes in Electric Vehicle Charging: Payment via Debit/Credit Cards and Practical Tips

Payment Options for Electric Vehicle Charging

In today's context of electric vehicles, charging stations often require specific apps or charging cards for the charging process. This sometimes leads to the inconvenience of drivers needing multiple apps and cards, with rates that can vary. However, developments are underway to alter this situation.

Payment via Debit/Credit Cards: New Rules and Deadlines

Starting April 13, all new fast-charging stations (with a power of at least 50 kW) must be capable of accepting payments via debit or credit cards. It's important to note that this requirement doesn't yet apply to existing stations. This change will only become mandatory for already existing stations by 2027.

Current Situation and Price Differences

While a few charging stations in our country already accept payments via debit or credit cards, this option often comes with a higher tariff compared to using a charging card or app. This stems from the implementation of part of the European regulation called "infrastructure for alternative fuels”.

European Legislation and Future Developments

This European legislation demands that member states provide sufficient charging infrastructure for electric vehicles. This includes providing clear price information at charging stations and establishing charging stations every 60 kilometers on highways by 2025.

Tips for Efficient Charging

  • To minimize costs, compare rates between different charging cards/apps and payments via debit/credit cards.
  • Plan your route in advance and look for locations offering favorable rates for charging.
  • Consider using charging cards that offer discounts or special rates at partner charging points.
  • Regularly check for updates on new charging stations accepting payments via debit or credit cards to broaden your options.

These changes in charging infrastructure offer more convenience and transparency to electric vehicle drivers, thereby encouraging the ongoing development of electric charging in the future.
