ID. Polo: the affordable electric volkswagen everyone's waiting for

Volkswagen has just shared more details about the ID. Polo, and it's exactly the kind of electric car many people have been hoping for: a compact, practical model that's genuinely fun to drive and, crucially, doesn't cost the earth. With a starting price just under €25,000, the brand is finally making electric mobility accessible to a wide audience without skimping on quality or space.

The entry-level versions come with a 37 kWh LFP battery, delivering around 300 kilometres of WLTP range. That's plenty for daily commutes, city runs, or errands without ever thinking twice about range. Go for the larger 52 kWh NMC battery and you'll comfortably hit 450 kilometres – perfect for weekend getaways with no charging anxiety. Fast charging peaks at 130 kW, taking you from 10 to 80 percent in about 23 minutes. Impressive for a car at this price point.

There are four power options: the base model with 116 hp, a 135 hp variant on the smaller battery, then 211 hp, and finally the GTI with 226 hp on the bigger pack. All front-wheel drive, powered by a new efficient electric motor producing 290 Nm of torque. The result is instant acceleration, no gear shifts, and a low centre of gravity thanks to the MEB+ platform, making the car stable and nimble on the road. The GTI even gets adaptive dampers and a limited-slip differential – features you'd normally expect in much pricier performance hatches.

When it comes to space, the ID. Polo punches above its weight. It's roughly the same length as the current Polo – just over four metres – but inside it feels like a class above. More rear legroom, generous headroom, and a boot that holds 435 litres, expanding to 1,243 litres with the seats folded. Ideal for shopping trips, luggage, or spontaneous furniture runs.

The prototypes are nearly production-ready and are finishing final testing around the world. The global reveal is set for early 2026, with orders opening at the end of April. It's the first in a wave of affordable electric Volkswagens, and it looks like a car that could genuinely shake up the market. No unnecessary gimmicks – just a solid, silent, future-proof Polo that does what a Polo has always done best.
